Here's where things get murky. The jewelry industry uses several terms that sound interchangeable but mean wildly different things:
Natural turquoise comes straight from the earth with no treatment beyond cutting and polishing. This is increasingly rare—some estimates suggest less than 3% of turquoise on the market today qualifies.
Stabilized turquoise is real stone that's been infused with resin or epoxy to harden it. Most turquoise is naturally soft and porous, so stabilization makes it wearable without crumbling. This is still authentic turquoise, just treated.
Enhanced turquoise has been dyed or color-treated to deepen that coveted blue. Still real stone, but manipulated.
Reconstituted turquoise takes turquoise dust and chips, mixes them with binding agents, and forms them into new shapes. Technically contains turquoise. Technically.
Simulated turquoise is plastic, resin, or dyed howlite made to look like the real thing. No actual turquoise involved.
That $28 ring? It could legally be called "genuine" while being reconstituted or heavily enhanced. The word has almost no legal meaning in jewelry marketing.
Mining turquoise isn't like mining diamonds. You can't just dig deeper or open a new tunnel when demand increases. Most significant American turquoise mines have closed—not because they ran out of stone, but because extraction costs exceeded the stone's value, or because the land use changed.
